The Toon Cup is awarded annually to a local sports club in recognition of its achievement during the year to encourage the introduction of and continued participation of young people from grass roots to competitive level. Fareham is twinned with the towns of Pulheim in Germany (near Cologne) and Vannes in France (in southern Britanny). There is a programme of civic visits between the Borough Council and the authorities of each twin town, in alternate years. The visits to and from Pulheim normally involve 'working meetings' to learn about the way each deals with matters of common interest. There are arrangements for staff exchanges between the officers of Fareham and Vannes for the same purpose.

In areas where excessive speed is considered a risk to public safety the local authority may construct 'speed humps' for the purpose of reducing traffic speeds. Speed humps are typically constructed in residential roads and in areas where there may be a large amount of pedestrian traffic (such as near school entrances). A travel plan is typically a package of practical measures to encourage staff to choose alternatives to the car. Employers are encouraged to develop travel plans, aimed at reducing car use for travel to work and for travel for business. A range of measures can be used to make a positive impact, e.g. setting up a car sharing scheme, providing cycling facilities, negotiating improved bus services and offering attractive flexible-working practices.

All local authorities have a duty under the Town and Country Planning Act to preserve and protect trees that offer a reasonable degree of public benefit or provide amenity value. The policy framework within which we work includes guidance and legislation from Central Government, industry bodies and local plans. This framework supports the work of the Councils Arborist in the business of inspecting and assessing trees on site.
If work is required to be carried out on protected trees the Council encourages the use of the new
1APP TPO application form - item 31 (opens new window), which is due to become mandatory in a few months.
