Citizen and Young Citizen of Honour Awards 2009

Fareham Borough Council has been rewarding local residents in recognition of their unpaid work within the community for a number of years. In 2001 we introduced a Young Citizen of the Year award to recognise the bravery and courage of young people in Fareham aged between 4 and 18.

To make the award easier to understand we have developed a short presentation for groups, explaining the award scheme and how to nominate colleagues and friends.  There are three nomination categories, each with their own set of criteria.

The three nomination categories for the scheme are:

Citizen of Honour (18 years plus)

This category is awarded in recognition of community and voluntary service which benefits the local community. Award winners could include those who have shown a long-term commitment to volunteering with a local charity, or voluntary group whose aim is to improve the quality of life for local residents. Young Citizen of the Year (4 - 11 years)

This award celebrates an outstanding act of bravery, a regular selfless act for others, or for overcoming and learning to adapt to a registered disability. Young people who are nominated for this award may be making a positive endeavour to take part in community or voluntary activities, or regularly providing care or support to a relative or friend. Young Citizen of the Year (12 - 18 years)

Many young people already offer their time voluntarily to help with local community initiatives and groups. This award is in recognition of community and voluntary service which benefits the local community. Like the Citizen of Honour Award young people may be volunteering with a local charity or voluntary group, or providing on-going care to an individual. We would like to encourage nominations both from group leaders and other young people who feel that their peers deserve recognition. Young Person (12 - 18 years) Online form

What happens next?

When you have made your nomination and after the closing date, all applicants are selected by Councillors at a Full Council Meeting.  The winners (accompanied by two guests) are presented with their award badges by the outgoing Mayor at the annual Mayor Making Ceremony which is held in May.  Following that, the winners and four guests are invited to the Mayor's Parlour to meet the new Mayor, where they are presented with their framed Citizen of Honour certificates.  They will also be invited to sign the Citizen of Honour book.

Throughout the year, the winners and a guest are invited toattend several civic functions, and will also receive a free family ticket to the Pantomime at Ferneham Hall.  The Young Citizen(s) of Honour will also be invited to switch on the Christmas lights in Fareham with the Mayor.

Finally the winners names are added to the plaque in the Civic Offices Public Reception area, where they are permanently displayed.
