Equality & Inclusion
Key Commitments
The Council’s overall objectives are to:
- Develop and sustain a strong and inclusive community in which everyone, regardless of who they are or their circumstances in life, feels part of the local community and is able to participate in and contribute to the democratic, social, economic and cultural life of the Borough.
- Promote good relations between all sections of the local community, eliminate discrimination and reduce disadvantage where it occurs.
The Council will take a positive approach to community inclusion by recognising and responding to the diverse needs of all sections of the local community. It will:
- Deliver quality services that are accessible to everyone who needs them.
- Treat all customers equally and fairly, whilst recognising that this does not mean providing the same service in the same way to everybody.
- Eliminate discrimination – whether deliberate or unwitting – on the basis of race, disability, gender, age, marital/family status, or sexual orientation.
- Address disadvantage caused by factors such as low income, poor literacy, lack of IT skills, and no access to a car or the Internet.
- Develop a workforce that reflects the diversity of the working population in the local “travel to work” area.
- Provide fair and equal access to employment opportunities within the Council and treat all employees fairly and with dignity.
- Work in partnership with other agencies and organisations to promote inclusion and equality.
- Consult with and involve individual customers, local community groups, voluntary organisations, businesses and other agencies in the development and review of its strategies, policies, plans and services.
- Improve its understanding and knowledge of the needs and problems of all its customers.
- Ensure that all employees and members have the necessary knowledge and skills to engage with all sections of the community.
