BAT 505 (Commenced October 2007)

Following an improvement in the prevention of anaerobic conditions arising from composting windrows at the Downend site using BAT 506 (See previous trials) but an increase complaints about general composting odours from local residents, Veolia have further researched solutions to specifically reduce the potential for odour at Downend compost site, where residential premises are in close proximity and where local geography around the site allows odour pockets to form.

In conjunction with a continuation of the use of BAT 506 and with the agreement of the Environment Agency, Veolia have commissioned a trial of an innoculant known as BAT 505, which is a topical application (applied over the top of windrows) added once the windrows have been formed and again after each subsequent turn of the windrow.  This acts in 3 ways:

  • Enzymes in the product react to decompose odourous gasses.
  • Bio-degredation of troublesome compounds is increased.
  • Available nitrate decreases the occurrence of Reduced Sulphur Compounds (RSC).

BAT 505 is accredited for use by the Soil Association.

The expected benefit is a reduction in the fugitive odours escaping from composting windrows when they are not being.

The trial is expected to last for one year.
