The disease reduction programme (DRP) is part of the ‘Fit for Work, Fit for Life, Fit for Tomorrow’ Strategic Programme (FIT3) (this is an external hyperlink) which is being run by the Health and Safety Executive (this is an external hyperlink). The FIT3 strategic programme aims to deliver a 6% reduction in the incidence rate of cases of work related ill health by the end of the 2007/8 financial year.
In order to achieve this the DRP will focus on three priority areas;
In each of these areas the DRP will deliver a variety of interventions including; inspections, publicity campaigns and supply chain initiatives in order to change behaviour in target industries, reduce exposure to causative agents and ultimately to reduce the incidence of ill health.
There is no legal duty for an employer to manage absence but the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) (this is an external hyperlink) believes that managing absence should be a key and central part of managing all aspects of health in the workplace. It is pivotal to both the prevention of ill health and the retention of sick and disabled workers in employment.
To support employers in improving their practices in managing health at work, the HSE have developed a Sickness Absence Recording Tool (this is an external hyperlink) to compliment the DRP initiative.
