About the Food Safety Service
The Borough of Fareham has approximately 600 commercial
premises where food is sold, distributed, manufactured or handled.
Fareham Borough Council is designated as a Food Authority
under the Food Safety Act 1990 and as such has a statutory duty
to enforce the Act. Environmental Health staff working
within the Food, Health and Safety and Licensing Team have the
delegated authority to enforce the legislation.
Objectives of the Service
- To ensure all premises due for inspection are inspected
in accordance with statutory Codes of Practice.
- To take appropriate enforcement action according to the
risk involved and in accordance with the Authority's Food
safety Enforcement Policy.
- To ensure all staff involved in food safety work are
properly qualified and competent for the work.
- To respond to all food complaints and complaints
regarding food safety within 2 working days.
- To respond to all food hazard warnings on the day of
receipt.
- To maintain a food sampling programme.
- To respond to all cases of food-borne infectious diseases
on the day of receipt.
- To provide advice to business on food safety matters
within 5 working days of any request.
- To maintain a computer system that will give accurate and
up to date information on registered food premises,
inspection and complaint history and records of food
sampling and infectious disease investigation.
- To encourage standards of hygiene higher than the minimum
required by law.
- To liaise, co-ordinate and work where possible in
partnership with other groups, organisations and agencies
to achieve better standards of food safety.
- To determine all butchers' shop Licence and Vertical
Directive approvals within 28 days of receipt of the
request.
- To enable the provision of training for food handlers
within the Borough (The programme for 2004 is currently
being developed).
- To ensure all food businesses are registered.
