This information page is by no means an exhaustive discussion of this extensive topic, but is designed to shed a little light on the urban fox, its habits and characteristics and hopefully to answer the most commonly asked questions.
Described in the Concise Oxford dictionary as a 'Red-furred bushy tailed carnivorous quadruped preserved in England etc. as beast of chase, proverbial for cunning', it has become steeped in folk lore and has indeed earned a reputation as being a highly intelligent survivor. It has also been described, with some accuracy, as a jack of all trades and a master of quite a few of them. It is of little surprise then that this rather distinctive creature has prospered in habitats from the deserts of Africa and the Poles to the cities of the western world.
Throughout the Borough of Fareham where medium density housing is found, such as in Hill Head, Stubbington and Locks Heath, the fox has adapted to the challenges of urban life and flourished. This population has largely co-existed with man without too much disruption to either party, but on occasion, foxes can cause an inconvenience to householders and their presence can be unwanted. It must be remembered that the urban fox is a creation of man - a reflection of urban expansion into the countryside and the natural home of the fox.
Never far from controversy, it has earned a reputation for intelligence, ingenuity and audacity which highlights just why it is found on almost every continent and every location. What is certain, however, is that the urban fox is here to stay.
