Health and Safety at Work

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 says:

  • Employers have to look after the health and safety of their employees.
  • Employees and the self-employed have to look after their own safety.
  • All have to take care of the health and safety of others, for example, members of the public who may be affected by their work.

There are two organisations that are involved with the enforcing of the Act. These are the borough council and the Health and Safety Executive.

Fareham Borough Council's Environmental Health Service is responsible for the enforcement of health and safety matters in a range of non-industrial premises such as: shops; offices; warehouses; restaurants; hotels; hairdressers; cinemas and other places of entertainment, which includes the following:

  • investigates complaints about workplaces from employees and public
  • investigates accidents and cases of ill health
  • enforces good standards, usually by advising people on how to comply with the law, but sometimes by ordering them to make improvements and, if necessary, by prosecuting them
  • provides information and advice.

The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for other premises and undertakes research on significant health and safety issues.  For more information see the HSE Website (this is an external hyperlink).

We try to ensure that all employers, employees and self-employed persons understand and comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and associated legislation.
