Legal Requirements for Private Hire Drivers

There are a number of different laws affecting Private Hire drivers, the main Acts of Parliament covering this licence are:

• Part II Local Government(Miscellaneous Provision) Act 1976
• Private Hire Vehicles (Carriage of Guide Dogs) Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (this is an external hyperlink)

The 1976 Act says that we cannot grant you a licence unless we are satisfied that:

• You are a ‘fit and proper’ person to hold a drivers licence
• You currently hold and have held a full driving licence issued by the DVLA (this is an external hyperlink) for a period of 2 years before making your application
• You are 18 years old or above.
• You have been honest in supplying all the necessary information required to us, a false statement on your application is a serious offence
• You have a sound knowledge of the Borough
• You have read the conditions of licence.
