Sea Water

During the summer months (May to September) the Environment Agency carries out bacteriological testing of the sea water at the borough's beaches. The results are posted on our notice boards located in the car parks at Monks Hill, Salterns Road and Hill Head Sailing Club (please see table below).

Guideline bathing water must meet the guideline standards for faecal coliform, total coliform and faecal streptococci parameters and the mandatory standard for the faecal and total coliform parameters of the Bathing Water Directive 76/160/EEC.

  • Excellent - a) total coliform no more than 500 per 100ml

                            b) faecal coliform no more than 100 per100ml

                            c) faecal streptococci no more than 100 per 100ml

  • Good - a) total coliform no more than 10,000 per 100ml

                       b) faecal coliform no more than 2,000 per 100ml

                    

  • Poor - sample did not meet the required standards in the Directive.

River Water

The Environment Agency also test the water from the River Meon and the River Wallington as well as Fareham Creek and Hook Lake. The results can be found at: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/maps/info/river (this is an external hyperlink).
