Fareham is less than 80 miles from London and is close to the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth It has good road and rail links and the M27 coast road skirts the town. These good communications make Fareham an ideal centre for touring the surrounding area, but it is not just a place to visit. It is very much a place in which to live and work. It has attractive housing, good shopping centres, modern schools and a wide range of leisure and cultural facilities. The borough has a superb stretch of unspoilt coastline with areas dedicated to both recreation and conservation.
Fareham Borough covers almost 30 square miles of southern Hampshire midway between Portsmouth and Southampton. With the town of Fareham in the centre, the Borough extends from Portchester, bordering the northern side of Portsmouth Harbour in the east, to the river Hamble in the west from south to north, it reaches from the Solent coastline at Hill Head northwards into rural Hampshire towards Wickham.
The old market town of Fareham is now a flourishing commercial centre and is the Borough's largest single community. There are, however, several other important local centres based on former villages. Although these have been surrounded by new developments they do retain their own identities. Portchester lies to the east of Fareham town and to the west are Titchfield, Warsash, Park Gate, Locks Heath and Sarisbury. To the south are Stubbington and Hill Head.
The Borough has many reminders of its long history with the ruins of Portchester Castle and Titchfield Abbey.
The Borough has grown rapidly in recent years with the development of extensive new areas of housing, shops and industry. More new developments are proposed, particularly in the town centre, Western Wards and Whiteley. The changes that have taken place so far have been sympathetic to and sought to retain the Borough's attractive historic features.
