Countryside Ranger Service

Protecting and Enhancing the EnvironmentAn image of a man cutting down a tree

Our Countryside Ranger Service is responsible for the management of the Borough Council's informal open space including important sites such as Holly Hill Woodland Park, Warsash Common, Fort Fareham, woodlands in Whiteley, The Gillies and Portchester Common (a site of special scientific interest).

There are three Rangers, all of whom have practical countryside and conservation skills. Each Ranger is responsible for sites in a specific part of the Borough and is a local point of contact for people living in that area. They each have local knowledge of the sites and are the local face of the council.

Our Countryside Rangers patrol the informal open spaces to make sure that they are safe for public use, undertake practical conservation work, run events and involve local people to care for their natural environment.

Specialist advice is offered to any organisation, group or individual who is interested in the well being and future of Fareham's countryside. Advice includes nature conservation management, landscape enhancement, arboriculture and practical conservation skills.

The Rangers develop working partnerships with many people and organisations,  which means that more can be achieved on the ground for the benefit of all. These partnerships include working with volunteer groups, private landowners such as   farmers, local companies, schools and individuals within the council itself.

We create opportunities for and undertake educational and interpretation activities to enable people to gain a greater understanding of the countryside and the issues affecting it.

If you would like any further information on the Countryside Service please contact Customer Services on Tel: 01329 236100 or e-mail customerservices@fareham.gov.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a conservation area?
A conservation area is described in law as: ''an area of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance'' Many historic towns and villages have a special character which results from a gradual process of growth and development. The layout of buildings, roads, paths, trees and open spaces that are essential to their character have often evolved over hundreds of years. The local materials and traditional techniques that were used in the construction of historic buildings result in a local distinctiveness and individuality which contributes to this special character.

Is my property in a conservation area?
Detailed maps of each conservation area are on display in the Civic Offices. You are welcome to visit the offices and view the maps or to telephone to speak to a planning officer within normal office hours.

What restrictions apply to a building in a conservation area?
Planning permission is sometimes required for alterations to properties because they lie within a conservation area. You are welcome to visit the offices or to speak to a planning officer concerning whether your particular proposal will require an application to be made. Remember that ''Conservation Area Consent'' is sometimes required for demolition works within a conservation area.
