Walk Twelve: Funtley

The Walk
Head along Funtley Road towards the railway. Just before you reach the bridge take the rough lane to the right. Towards the end of the lane the path cuts between housing and you will find yourself in an open space alongside the railway. Follow the path, keeping the railway to your left, until you reach a footbridge crossing the tracks.
Go over the bridge and turn right into a side road. Not far down this road you will see a footpath turning to the right. Take this path and follow it across the river. Once you have crossed the river you will find yourself in the grounds of a cottage. Don't panic! Follow the footpath round to the left and through a gate. Continue along this track, through another gate and onto Funtley Road.
Turn left and carefully follow Funtley Road, sticking to the grass verge wherever possible. River Lane will appear on the left hand side. Take this turning and follow the road until just before an old railway bridge where you will find a footpath turning between cottages to the right. (Short cut: Remain on River Lane and follow it under the old bridge, straight into Funtley Road. You will soon see the Miners Arms to your left).
Walk along this path, over a stile, following a hedge along the boundaries of the fields and at the end of the hedge continue over a stile, straight ahead, onto an old lane. You should see an old coppice to the left. Follow this lane, up and round to the left - over more stiles! The path will turn to the left, heading alongside the M27. Follow this path until it brings you out by a subway under the motorway.
Ignore the subway and head straight ahead and round to the left until you are on a track surrounded by woods on either side. Continue along this path until you see the road cutting underneath. Just before the road, on the left, you will find a steep slope down the side of the embankment. Descend carefully!
When you reach the road turn right into Funtley Road and continue on this route until you reach The Miners' Arms

From M27 junction 11 head towards Fareham. At the roundabout get into the right hand lane and take the turning into Wallington Way (A32). Head straight across the first roundabout then right at the second roundabout. Take the second left hand turn for Old Turnpike. At the traffic lights at the top, head straight across into Kiln Road. Continue along Kiln Road, following the right hand bend round into Funtley Hill. Go under the motorway and follow the road round to the left. You are now in Funtley Road. You will see The Miners' Arms along to the right. Park in this vicinity.
