The Grounds Maintenance Team are responsible for cutting all of the grass verges within the Borough for the Highways Department.
Highway grass cutting is carried out using front line rotary ride on grass cutting equipment.
The machines currently being used are designed to mulch as much of the cuttings as possible so reducing the amount of cuttings left behind.
Every attempt is made to deposit cuttings back onto the verges.
The highway authority does not remove grass cutting deposited on the highway or pavements.
The Highway grass verges are cut from mid March to mid November on a continuous 10 working day cycle.
Obstacles are annually treated with residual weed control to maintain grass height.
On rural roads a one-metre width is cut twice a year.
Footpaths are cut one metre wide each side of the pathway twice a year.
Additional width cutting is carried out when signs are on the grass verges so that visibility is maintained.
All sight lines are cut where practicable 100 metres either side of the junction.
All shrub beds are pruned once per year and where practicable pruned to correct horticultural methods.
All shrub beds are pruned in such a manner as to leave the footway and highway unobstructed.
All weeds are removed and a residual weed killer is applied to control re-growth.
A further spot treatment is carried out mid summer to maintain control of re-growth.
Hedges are cut twice per year where they are part of the maintainable highway.
The hedges are generally cut using a flail type cutter and are cut on each face as appropriate or the face that is part of the maintainable highway. The tops are either flat or snow topped as required.
Hedge bases are cut back at the same time and cleared.
Special receptacles are provided for the deposit of dog and animal sediment, which are emptied on a weekly basis.
