Grounds Maintenance

Recreation Sites

The Grounds Maintenance Team provide and maintain the Recreational Sites within the Borough of Fareham on behalf of the Leisure Department.

Football/Rugby

All pitches are marked in white, and are on average dimension, 75m x 90m in the case of Football, and 70m x 100m excluding the dead ball area in the case of Rugby, subject to site constraints.

All pitches are spiked on a fortnightly cycle subject to ground conditions on alternative tracks in each cycle, to a depth of at least 150mm. All pitches are harrowed with a flat harrow on a fortnightly cycle subject to ground conditions on alternative tracks within each cycle.

At times subject to ground conditions through the playing season the pitches will be rolled to even out ridges and depressions. Twice per year all pitches are verti drained to improve drainage and break up the ground compaction. Once per year in the spring all pitch areas are treated with a selective herbicide to control weed infestation.

Hockey

Fareham currently has one grass pitch within the borough. The dimensions of the pitch is on average 55m x 90m subject to site constraints. All the lines are white.

The grass sward is maintained at a height of 12-18mm and is cut using a cylinder mower.

Spiking is carried out over the surface of the pitch on a two day cycle. Twice per year the surface is rolled using a tractor towed roller to achieve an even surface

Cricket

Cricket pitches are provided at a number of sites throughout the borough. All tables are rolled several times before the beginning of the season to create a firm and true surface to the tables and wickets. All squares are squared at the commencement of the season and all wickets are to regulation size. All creases are marked in white.

Each wicket is prepared to ensure an even no-erratic bounce of the ball throughout the wicket length. As part of the preparation of the wicket, all wickets are scarified, then box mowed to a height of 4mm. Wickets are rolled to even surface where conditions permit.

The outfield is cut to 25mm during play and marked in white. On the first working day after play all wickets are renovated and over seeded.

Bowling Greens

Fareham has two flat turf bowling greens. All greens are brushed daily to disperse any dew.

Greens are scarified once per week through the season and mowed three times per week to a height of 4.7mm.

All bowling green edges are edged back using shears

once per fortnight. Greens are rolled once per week in opposite to the direction of play. All greens are fertilised during the season on a fortnightly cycle. The grass sward is monitored for fungal infections or any pest and diseases and the appropriate treatments are carried out.

All greens are hollow tined at the end of the season and a top dressing is applied to the entire surface of the green.
