Fareham Borough Council operates an alternate bin collection system, collecting refuse one week and recyclables the next. There is a kerbside collection service for garden waste.
Many people have queries about recycling or refuse. If you have another question please contact us by email to customerservices@fareham.gov.uk or by telephoning 01329 236100.
Your recyclables are transported to the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Portsmouth where they are sorted and sent for processing into new items. Your green top bin waste is taken to the new incinerator in Portsmouth, which generates electricity for the National Grid. Very little of Fareham's household waste is now landfilled.
A kerbside collection of garden waste is available. The best solution for garden waste is to compost it at home as this avoids transport costs. If you do not have a home composter you can order composters at greatly reduced prices delivered to your door. Or you can use the Council's free kerbside garden waste collection service. Please email customerservices@fareham.gov.uk or telephone 01329 236100 to join the service.
The problem is that currently there are very limited markets for these materials. They are a mixture of plastic types and strengths, and are difficult to recycle economically. Although many manufacturers of packaging use the recycling symbol, it only indicates that it is theoretically possible to recycle it, not that there is a factory willing to take it. More information is available on the Project Integra website (this is an external hyperlink).
Its not possible to collect glass and paper together in the same collection vehicle. Some of the glass inevitably gets broken and gets caught up with the paper, making it difficult to process. Please take all glass jars and bottles to the recycling banks.
