What can I put in a Food Digester?

A Green Cone, pictured above, can take all food waste including meat, bones, fish and dairy products. The waste breaks down into water and nutrients which dissipate into the surrounding soil. They cannot take any garden waste and do not produce compost.

A Green Johanna, pictured below, also takes all food waste including meat, bones, fish and dairy products, but must also have garden waste put in. It produces a rich compost for the garden.

Where should I site my Food Digester?

This depends on the type you buy. The Green Cone must go in a sunny spot in your garden, the Green Johanna in the shade. More information is available from the Green Cone Company (this is an external hyperlink).

I've heard Fareham are carrying out a trial of Food Digesters.

Fareham Borough Council's trial has now finished.  The results showed that Food Digesters can remove a lot of food waste from the refuse bin, but residents must be careful which type they choose and how they site them.
