Making envelopes

These envelopes are easy to make out of old magazine pages, and a great way to promote reuse. They are a good follow-on from making recycled paper.

Equipment:

Envelope templates (528 Kb) PDF logo

Magazines

Scissors

Pencil

Glue

Prior to the lesson, print out a few copies of the envelope template provided with this pack, stick them to pieces of flexible card (a cereal box is a good thickness) and cut around the outer edge to create sturdy templates for envelope making.

Get the children to choose a nice page from a magazine (with strong colours or a nice picture on, for example). They should then trace a line around the template onto their chosen page and cut around it (younger children may need assistance with this bit!).

Next ask them to follow the instructions on the template to fold and glue the paper to create the envelope shape.

Top Tips:

If a pupil can’t find a whole page they want to use get them to make their envelope from paper that has been used on one side, folding it so that the outside is plain. They can then stick on pictures individually cut out from a magazine or draw their own design straight onto the envelope!
