Problems with refuse or recycling collections

Missed collection

A household refuse or recycling bin or garden waste sack is classed as missed if it was placed on the boundary of your property and was available at the scheduled collection.

We operate a three working day policy on the reporting of missed refuse and recycling bins and garden waste collections.

We apply this principle because:

1) The council must be informed of a missed bin within three working days from the close of business on your collection day. For example, if your bin was missed on a Monday, we must be advised by the end of Wednesday to enable us to return to empty it - Thursday would be too late.

2) We endeavour to return to empty missed bins within two working days of the reported missed bin. Outside of this period, we would ask you to take your refuse/recycling or garden waste in and re-present it on your next scheduled collection.

3) Refuse collections will have moved on to another area of the borough and it would be very inefficient and expensive to get a refuse collection vehicle to return for one bin.

If you feel your bin or garden waste has been missed as outlined above, please fill in our online form or phone 01329 236100 and we will return  to collect it. Please leave your bin or garden waste in the usual place for collection on the boundary of your property.

Recycling Bin Hangers

You may find a yellow or red bin hanger has been attached to your blue lid bin after it has been emptied.  The reasons for this are:

Yellow Bin Hanger - There were items not suitable for recycling in your bin, however, the crew felt that they were still able to collect it.  Too much contamination can lead to the entire lorry-load being rejected at the sorting plant. You need take no further action but please be aware of what can be recycled in the bin for the next collection.

Red Hanger - The bin is badly contaminated and if added to the collection vehicle, the whole load could be ruined and therefore rejected at the sorting plant. The bin, therefore, has not been emptied.  Please remove the items that are not acceptable for recycling and put your bin out as usual on the next scheduled day of recycling collection.
