Paper and card can be put in the household blue top recycling bins, but not shredded paper. Shredded paper gets caught in machinery at the sorting plant, where it jams it up and causes a fire risk. It can be put in paper banks. Yellow Pages can now be put in blue top recycling bins, or in paper banks.
There are a few paper banks around the Borough at:
Cardboard cannot be put in paper banks. The paper that is recovered from paper banks serves as the raw material in the manufacture of recycled newsprint. Because of its different fibre length and colour, cardboard is unsuitable in this recycling process and is just as much a contaminant as glass, plastics and other materials. Cardboard collected from the blue top recycling bins goes to a cardboard mill and is recycled back into cardboard.
