Fareham has a rich and diverse historic environment. Its older settlements, which have evolved over hundreds of years, and its many and varied historic buildings, contribute to a sense of place and local distinctiveness. They are an irreplaceable asset that retains a link to the past, and informs an understanding of the borough's long and interesting history. National Planning Policy supports effective protection for all aspects of the historic environment. The expectation is that it is to be valued and protected, both for its own sake, and as a part of the nation's cultural heritage and national identity.
The Borough of Fareham has nearly 600 listed buildings and Scheduled Ancient Monuments which span over 1,500 years of history. Thirteen conservation areas have been designated to protect the character and appearance of the borough's historic settlements. These web pages provide information about the protection of the borough's historic environment for listed buildings owners, those living and working in conservation areas and for anyone who has an interest in Fareham's historic environment. Listed building and conservation area legislation is contained in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and Government guidance is contained in Planning Policy Statement 5: Planning for the Historic Environment) (this is an external hyperlink). In addition, the historic environment of the borough is protected by the policies of the Fareham Borough Local Plan Review 2000 and the emerging Local Development Framework for Fareham.
