There are many buildings in Fareham, which are valued for their contribution to the local scene, or for local historical associations, but which do not possess the degree of special interest required for addition to the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.

Such buildings of local historic interest have been included on a local list compiled by the Council. Locally listed buildings do not enjoy the full legal protection given to those on the national list, but are afforded some protection by policy HE9 (Buildings of local architectural or historic interest), of the Fareham Borough Local Plan Review, 2000, when they are affected by development proposals.

The council makes further additions to the local list as buildings of sufficient interest come to light.
