Woodland

Three sources were used to identify the various woodland types: OS 1:25000 maps, the 'Hampshire Inventory of Ancient Woodland' (Hampshire County Council and English Nature 1995); and OS 1st edition 1" maps.

Old Woodland

This is generally pre 1810 woodland. Such woodland was identified on the basis of its presence on the OS 1st Edition 1" map and by being recorded as ancient woodland in the Ancient Woodland Inventory. The official definition of 'ancient woodland' is pre-1600. Where pre-1810 woodland was not assignable to one of the more specific land use-related woodland types, it was mapped as "other old woodland".
