The Landscape of Fareham

Historic Landscape Types

The existing landscape character of Fareham reflects not only geology, landform and ecology but also thousands of years of human impact.

The landscape we see now was formed at different periods in history. For example some areas composed of smaller irregular shaped fields may be medieval 'assarts' carved out of former woodland areas, whilst other areas composed of larger, more regular shaped fields may result from the enclosure of open land by Act of Parliament in the nineteenth century.

The interactive map below shows the broad pattern of historic landscape character in Fareham derived from old maps and aerial photographs.
