Community Infrastructure Study
Executive Summary
The provision of adequate facilities to serve the residents of the Borough is a high priority of the Borough Council. It therefore commissioned Ampersand limited to carry out a study of the community infrastructure in the Borough.
The Study provides information on such facilities as community centres, community schools, youth centres, day centres and places of worship, but it does not deal with other schools and health facilities.
The Study concludes that the current community centres, with one exception, are well used with some having to turn away bookings in the evening. Childcare is the backbone of all the community centres. Youth centres offer a variety of facilities, but all are significantly under utilised during the day. The community schools offer a broad spectrum of activities and there is broad enthusiasm to further develop community group involvement. Many places of worship have community facilities and are well used.
The Study includes various recommendations, the most significant of which are the investigation of the future of the Burridge Sports and Social Club, the replacement of facilities at Fareham Community Centre, the investigation of whether the youth centres with capacity can be used during the daytime, to explore additional classroom capacity in community schools and day centres and to evaluate the benefit of the proposed expansion of Locks Heath Free Church. It identifies various gaps in provision and refers to the need to improvements such as to improve capacity for leisure sport, and to proceed with the Western Wards Pool Project. It refers to the need for further investigation into whether spare youth centre capacity could meet the shortfall in out of hours childcare and pre-school nursery places and the options to provide a modern affordable space for community groups in Fareham town centre.
