South East Plan

The Government last year announced its intention to abolish Regional Strategies, including the South East Plan, through the Localism Bill.

The South East Plan, adopted in May 2009 by the previous Government, was revoked by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government on 6 July 2010 but was re-established on 10 November 2010 after a successful challenge by housing developer CALA Homes.

The South East Plan remains part of the statutory development plan until its abolition. However the proposed abolition can be regarded as a 'material consideration' by local planning authorities and inspectors when deciding planning applications and appeals. The weight given to any 'material consideration' depends on the individual circumstances and it is for the decision maker to decide on the appropriate weight.

The archived drafts and background technical documents for the South East Plan (this is an external hyperlink) are on the National Archives website.
