Flood Warnings

You can find out about the latest flood warnings that are in force in your area by going to the Environment agencies website at Environment Agency Floodwatch (this is an external hyperlink) or telephone 0845-988-1188.

When there is a risk of flooding the Agency issues warnings through the media on TV and radio weather bulletins. The areas that are of a particular risk, the Agency will send warning messages direct to people at home or at work by telephone, fax or pager using their Automatic Voice Messaging (AVM) System.

Further advice for the public is available from the Hampshire County Council Emergency Planning Website (this is an external hyperlink). This site includes useful links to other sites with useful information regarding flooding.

Sandbags

A limited number of sandbags may be provided in case of immediate and unforeseen flooding events.  A stock of about 150 sandbags will be held by Raynesway (RCS), on behalf of Fareham Borough Council, for emergency delivery from their Hoads Hill depot.  In locations where flash flooding has historically occurred and is likely to occur again in priority 1 or 2 situations, then the Council will consider the provision of an emergency reserve where the local community has put a flood plan in place and is prepared to manage the deployment of those sandbags.

Housholders are expected to be responsible for the provision of sandbags particularly if located in a known flood risk area or warning has been provided.

Unfilled sandbags and a supply of sand can be purchased from some DIY stores and Builders merchants (e.g. Keyline, Burdens etc).

Sandbags are a very temporary measure and where applicable other methods of property damage limitation should be explored.

As alternatives to sandbags refuse sacks, plastic bags, pillow cases etc can be partly filled with garden soil.  (Remember they get heave quickly, so do not overfill or fill too far away from required location).
