The Government, through Planning Policy Statement 1 (474 Kb)
, regards high quality and inclusive design as a key element in creating new sustainable development. High quality design includes individual buildings, public and private spaces and wider area development schemes. Urban design is an umbrella term used to describe the disciplines, processes and creativity required to achieve high quality design.
The council has set out its approach to ensuring high quality design through two documents. Firstly at a strategic level the Council has signed up to the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire's Quality Places Charter (2.37 Mb)
, which identifies a number of mechanisms and procedures by which the council will seek to embed the achievement of quality places as an important objective. Secondly the council has set out design policies in the Fareham Core Strategy Development Plan Document (3.03 Mb)
, which was adopted in October 2011. Policies CS15-17 set out the criteria and requirements that new development should attain.
