Environmental Improvement Proposals:
Eastern End of West Street Fareham
The completion of the improvement scheme at the western end of West Street in 2008 highlighted the need to improve the eastern end of West Street. Fareham Borough Council's Executive has allocated £250,000 for the scheme and Hampshire County Council's Regeneration of Older Urban Areas Initiative is to contribute a further £100,000.
Amended Layout
Following public consultation between the 23rd June and the 31st July 2009, an amended layout plan has been produced to address the concerns raised during consultations.
The layout has been amended as follows:
- The previously proposed new crossing between Davis Travel and the bus stop is omitted.
- The existing Quay Street pedestrian crossing between The Brass Monkey and Café Tusk will be upgraded to include pedestrian wait panels with request buttons.
- The full length of the existing bus lay-by will be retained with a slight kerb re-alignment allowing the relocation of the bus shelter slightly further away from the shop frontages.
- The new bus shelter will remain in the same location and will be larger but more transparent to allow views through the shelter to shop frontages.
- The number of proposed trees has been reduced from five to two, subject to locations being free of underground services. This will reduce the screening effect on shop frontages.
- Two seats are proposed for coach users.
- Banners are proposed on two lamp columns adjacent to the bus stop.
- The improvement works in Quay Street will be minimised and will be co-ordinated with Tesco-related highway works to reduce disruption.
