The council’s net budget for 2008/09 is
£11,953,900, an increase of £277,250,
or 2.4%. This includes £67,000 to
continue the modernisation programme
of the development control function,
£55,000 for more community initiatives
put forward by residents, an additional
£18,000 for crime prevention activities,
and a further £73,000 to meet the
demand for the council’s free green
waste service and enhance the level of
litter clearance work. The budget also
includes significant additional spending
on concessionary travel (+£278,000) to
meet the cost of the new national bus pass scheme, and an extra £335,150
to prepare the Local Development
Framework for Fareham and carry out
Area Action Planning work for the
proposed strategic development area in
the Borough. These costs are partly
funded by grants from the Government
(£441,600).
Other services have been maintained with the level of service provided improving in many areas, and economic pressures have been overcome through more efficient ways of working.
In 2007/08 the Council Tax for district councils ranged from £105 to £354. At £132.57, Fareham Borough Council had one of the lowest Council Taxes in the country, being positioned 10th out of 238 councils (13th in 2006/07 and 16th in 2005/06). With a 2.98% increase for 2008/09, the council continues to maintain this strong position.
The total bill (including
Hampshire County
Council, Hampshire Fire
and Rescue and
Hampshire Police
Authorities) for a band D property in 2007/08 was £1,269.63
and ranked 53rd compared to all 354
billing areas across the country (falling
within the 15% lowest taxes).
The average number of employees expected to be working for Fareham Borough Council in 2008/09 is 526 full time equivalents (508 in 2007/08).
