Concessionary Travel

Qualifying Disabled Groups

The following groups qualify as disabled residents for the purposes of concessionary travel providing that the person is aged 5 years or over for a bus pass application and 16 years or over for travel tokens.

 

The list below summarises the type of concessions available to each group and contains links to detailed information on each disabled group and each type of concession.

 

 

Blind

A person who is or who would normally be registered as a blind person with Social Services. If you are not registered you will need to produce evidence from an eye specialist. Please note, the partially sighted are included in another group described below.

Profoundly or Severely Deaf

A person who is or who would normally be registered as profoundly or severely deaf with Social Services. If you are not registered you will need to produce medical evidence in order to support your application.

Without Speech

A resident qualifies in this category if that person is unable to communicate orally in any language. You will need to produce medical evidence to support your claim.

Loss of the Use of Both Arms

A resident qualifies in this category if that person is unable to use their arms to carry out day to day tasks.

Severe Learning Disability

A resident qualifies in this category if that person is unable to understand new and complex legislation. This disability must have started before adulthood and have had a lasting effect on development. You will need to provide evidence to support claim.

Partially Sighted

A person who is or who would normally be registered as a partially sighted person with Social Services. If you are not registered you will need to produce evidence from an eye specialist to this effect.

Substantial and Long Term Difficulty in Walking

A resident qualifies in this category if that person is in receipt of higher rate mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance or a War Pensioners mobility supplement.

 

Other applicants will need to demonstrate that they:

  • are unable to walk more than 100m
  • suffer excessive pain during the walk
  • the condition has lasted for more than a year and will probably last for a number of years

You will need to provide medical evidence to support your claim.

Refused a Driving Licence on Medical Grounds

A resident qualifies in this category if that person has been refused or is likely to refused a driving licence on medical grounds, other than for the misuse of drugs or alcohol. You will need to provide evidence to support your claim.
