In May 2002 the arrangements for electing councillors to Fareham Borough Council changed. The Borough is now divided into 15 wards, each returning two councillors (three in Portchester East), giving a Council of 31 elected members. Elections are held across the Borough usually on the first Thursday in May in alternate "even" years, i.e. 2004, 2006 etc.
The other local government elections held in the Borough are for the election of county councillors to Hampshire County Council. These elections are held every four years, again on the first Thursday in May. The last county council election was in May 2005; the next is due in 2009.
Members of Parliament are elected to the House of Commons at a Parliamentary general election. There are two constituencies covering the Borough of Fareham: the Stubbington and Hill Head wards of the Borough form part of the Gosport constituency and all remaining wards fall into the Fareham constituency. A general election has to be held within 5 years of the last one, but could actually take place at any time. The last election was held on 5 May 2005.
The Borough of Fareham comes into the South East region, which returns 10 members to the European Parliament. Elections are held every 5 years; the next election is due in 2009. Contact details are available for the South East constituency.
