Nationality - who can register?

1. To be included in the Register of Electors persons must be British, Commonwealth, Irish Citizens or Citizens of other European Union Member States.

2. Citizens of the following Commonwealth & British Dependent Territories are qualified to be registered:

Commonwealth Countries

Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji Islands, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, The Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Naura, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Swaziland, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

British Dependent Territories

Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Hong Kong**, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, St Helena and the Dependencies, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Tristan da Cunha, Turks and Caicos Islands.

3. ** Many Hong Kong citizens already possess British citizenship and are eligible to registration. However, the majority of Hong Kong citizens were previously British Dependent Territory (BDT) citizens until Hong Kong ceased to be a BDT on 1 July 1997. They will now be classed as British Nationals (Overseas) or British Overseas citizens - both come within the meaning of "Commonwealth Citizens" as defined by the British Nationality Act 1981 and are eligible for registration.

4. Citizens of the following European Union Member States will be registered to vote at local government elections only:- Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.   They may additionally make a separate application to the Elections Office to register to vote at European Parliamentary Elections;
