Can someone vote on my behalf?

You can appoint a proxy (i.e. someone to vote on your behalf) if you cannot reasonably be expected to go to the polling station and vote in person.

The person you appoint as your proxy must be qualified to vote in the type of election concerned. They should be someone you trust and be willing to go to your polling station and vote for you in the way you wish. (If they need to, your proxy can make application to vote for you by post). A person cannot vote as proxy for more than two voters unless they are the husband/wife, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, child or grandchild of the voter.

To make an application to vote by proxy at a particular election (this is an external hyperlink), simply print the form, fill it in, sign the declaration and return it to Election Services, Civic Offices, Civic Way, Fareham PO16 7AZ. Each person applying must complete a separate form. You cannot complete this form electronically as we need a signature from you.

If you wish to arrange for someone to vote on your behalf in all future elections until further notice you may do so if you qualify on the following grounds (a form is available from the Election Services office):

  • physical incapacity
  • occupation, service or employment
  • attendance on a course
  • British citizen living overseas (such applications generally require some form of attestation)

Please note: there is a closing date for general applications which is 11 working days before the election if you are cancelling or changing your proxy or 6 working days before the election for new applications.   It may be possible to make application after that date in the event of an unforeseen medical emergency.
