Electoral Registration Canvassers

Fareham Borough Council is recruiting canvassers to help carry out its annual audit of the electoral register to ensure that everyone who is entitled to vote in all types of elections is registered and able to do so. This involves delivering forms to a designated area in Fareham in the middle of August, delivering reminders to non-responders in mid September and visiting households who have not responded during October and collecting completed electoral registration forms. The information collected on the forms provides the data for the electoral register.

You must be available to deliver the forms within the prescribed timescale and visit non-responding properties during the evenings and at weekends and be available to attend training sessions relating to the job and personal safety.

Potential canvassers will:

• Have excellent communication skills

• Be active and physically fit

• Be professional, tactful and polite and maintain confidentiality at all times.

• Be reliable and honest

• Have clear, legible handwriting and good attention to detail

• Be motivated and committed to work such hours as may be necessary to achieve the purposes of this post.

• Be eligible to work in the UK

You will be paid a fee for each form you deliver and another fee for each form you help residents to complete. Thorough training and instruction will be provided which you will be paid to attend. A full job description and person specification are available below.

If you are registered unemployed, you are strongly advised to consult your local unemployment benefits office before you accept any offer of employment we may make you: taking up employment as a temporary canvasser may affect your entitlement to benefits.

Subject to satisfactory performance, you may apply to be reappointed in future years to work in the same or an agreed alternative area.
