Henry Cort Millennium Exhibition

Artist - Edward Fokin

Tree of Life by Edward FokinEdward Fokin obtained a first class degree in calligraphy, graphic design, painting sculpture, metal design and decorative art from St Petersburg State Art Academy and has also specialist knowledge in the restoration of metals. He has worked as a professional metal worker and lectures at the Academy.

Edward has exhibited widely throughout Europe and is a member of the Union of Blacksmiths, Russia.

For the Henry Cort Exhibition, Edward has designed and made the sculptures at the east and west entrances. Edward calls these "The Smith Tree of Life". They link two ideas: the ancient profession of the blacksmith with the tree, regarded by many people as a symbol of life and fertility. The stained glass in the crown of the tree is another reference to an ancient craft. A fence encircles these with panels illustrating people and items from Fareham market.
