Andy Frost is a sculptor based in
Southampton, and working mostly in wood. After leaving Coventry
Polytechnic in 1979 with First Class Honours in Fine Art, his
postgraduate studies included scholarships in the Netherlands and
USA. Since 1986 he has amassed over 100 commissions all over the
country, including the prestigious adventure playground at the
Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre in Cumbria. Much of his recent
work has involved the design and construction of play areas,
often involving schools and local communities.
Fareham's Market Place Play Area was designed in collaboration with pupils of Ranvilles Junior School. "They produced drawings and models suggesting ideas and images relating to the market place. These ranged from towers to market stalls to giant carrots. These were then developed further into a final structure that fitted onto the given floor layout of site and conformed to current safety recommendations for play areas."
The main structure is constructed in oak and spruce with iron fittings. The surface is a coloured rubber material. "Adjacent seats will provide a resting place for shopping-fatigued parents!"
Peter Clutterbuck has recently been commissioned to design and make the fence to surround this playspace.
