Following an apprenticeship
and a Masters Degree, Michael undertook training in restoration
at the European School in Venice. In 1990 Michael set up his own
metal working firm at Krefeld-Linn, Germany.
Michael participated in several events like the Newcastle Obelisk and the Globe Theatre gates. He is a member of his local metalworkers guild.
Being much more a craftsman than an artist, most of Michael's work is of a very practical nature. He sees his task in being true to the material and the requirements of the customer. Based on a thorough knowledge of traditional techniques and styles he is seeking to design for today and the future.
Michael has produced the only sculpture within the Exhibition directly related to Henry Cort. His Commemorative Plaque consists of a 3 metre diameter circle with a basic geometric pattern in forged wrought iron. Wrought iron also outlines the pictures of the furnace, forge hammer and grooved rollers - the key developments and inventions of Henry Cort. The Plaque is infilled with various mosaics of pebbles and a variety of natural stones. Bronze plates provide additional information.
The mosaic paving within the Commemorative Plaque was undertaken by Sylvia Domer and Ulla Signs. Sylvia is a landscape architect much influenced by traditional English gardening. The mosaic emphasises the radiant wrought iron lines and adds substance to the iron outlines of the pictures describing the wrought iron processing.
