Jouko Nieminen is a master blacksmith
who first studied metal smithing at the Savonlinna Art and Crafts
School followed by a blacksmith apprenticeship. He also studied
at the University of Industrial Arts of Helsinki. He became a
master blacksmith in 1990. Jouko and two other blacksmiths set up
their own forge Taontapaja Rauta-Aika (Iron Age Forge) in Vantaa,
Helsinki, Finland in 1986.
Jouko has produced work for numerous exhibitions and international events. In 1998 he was The Artistic Hand Worker of the Year in Finland. He is a member of the Artistic Blacksmith Association, The Master Guild of Helsinki, and the Chairman of The Helsinki Handcraft and Industrial Association (founded 1868).
For the Henry Cort Exhibition, Jouko has designed and made the Tipping Scale, a water sculpture. This consists of two groups of forged pillars with bowls of copper, bronze and brass. The scales fill and tip creating a continuous cascade of water. The main idea behind this piece is to connect the sound and movement of the bowls and water with the mechanical impression of the sculpture.
