Fareham Borough Council has been accepted onto the Government's wider Eco-Town programme and awarded £200,000 for the strategic development area north of Fareham.
The money will be used to help plan the new "green" development site, with studies focusing on the provision of green space, waste, water and renewable energy.
The site will comprise around 7,000 new homes, businesses, a large amount of open space, schools, shops, health and community centres, and the first houses on the site should be ready for occupation from around 2016.
Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: "Being given funding to help the development area become an 'Eco-Town' by the government is great news for Fareham and for the new community we are planning. The Council's emerging vision for the Strategic Development Area is that, given the scale of development, it will have the services needed to establish its own character and identity, support self containment, whilst delivering high standards of sustainability. The funding will help us meet Eco-Town standards which include the delivery of major infrastructure, such as transport provision to serve the development."
Sites previously approved as Eco-Towns are already receiving large amounts of Government funding for "eco show homes" and hi-tech features such as energy provided from natural sources, systems for saving water and composting waste, rapid routes for buses with real time travel information, and facilities for electric cars and bikes.
Fareham Borough Council and the developers of the new site need to know what potential residents and those living nearby want to see there. Members of the public interested in taking part in future consultation processes for this new and exciting development, should email planningpolicy@fareham.gov.uk or send your contact details to Planning Policy at Fareham Borough Council.
