Essential tree work at Mancroft Avenue

Following the collapse of a large oak tree in Mancroft Avenue, Stubbington in October, the remainder of the tree and surrounding trees have now been thoroughly surveyed and inspected by an independent tree consultant.

The investigations conclude that the oak tree, which was damaged when the neighbouring tree fell, should be completely removed due to the presence of a column of decay within the stem and a cavity at ground level.

Executive Member for Community, Councillor Connie Hockley, said: “The Council places a high value on its trees, and will act to retain them wherever possible, but unfortunately in this case the work to remove this tree is considered essential. However, this will provide a good opportunity for replacement planting to be undertaken in order to continue the oak presence in the area.”

The work is programmed to begin on Friday 25th January 2008 and planting is expected to take place shortly after operations are completed. New planting will comprise of three oak trees in order to preserve the valuable character and heritage that the mature trees provide, and to provide amenity for people to enjoy for many years to come. The trees will be larger than the usual size planted, both to increase their initial contribution to the area’s amenity, and to discourage damage from vandals.

Routine maintenance pruning work will also be undertaken on two of the remaining four oak trees in this location. This work is not anticipated to have a significant adverse effect on the appearance of the trees, but will enable their safe retention for the future.
