The Civic Offices in Fareham Town Centre is home to Fareham Borough Council.
Construction of the Civic Offices began in 1974 and was completed in late 1975. Before then Council departments were located in different buildings, spread around the town – Westbury Manor housed the Council Chamber and meeting rooms and also the Treasurer’s department.
Other departments were located in West Street, Osborn Road, Trinity Street and Wickham Road, above shops, banks and in portacabins!
By early 1976 all were relocated in the Civic Offices, making it easier for residents having just one central point to visit and improved working processes with most of the staff located together.
Since it was built the building has been updated internally with a new Customer Service Centre only recently being completed including a new entrance with a revolving door and new signage.
A complete re-furbishment of the Council Chamber and committee meeting rooms was completed in September 2007, which is the first re-furbishment of this floor since the building first opened in 1975.
The building still has some of its original features, such as exposed brick walls in the lift lobby, and the 'open plan' office environment has mostly been kept throughout. The original carpets were replaced between October 2006 and June 2007.
