During the 18th Century the population of the area gradually increased and a drastic rebuilding programme became necessary. A result of this was that many older, more squalid dwellings were pulled down, to be replaced by some of the fine stately buildings for which Georgians are renowned. Many of these have survived to the present day and there are many fine examples of Georgian architecture in Fareham High Street. In fact, the author William Thackeray spent many school holidays here visiting his grandmother in a house located in the High Street. After he was famous he would often visit his Aunt who lived in West Street.
