Built around 1740 the Fishermans Rest is a Grade II listed building. It began life as a Tannery before becoming the "Railway Inn" in the late 1800's. Early maps show a ducking stool located where the pub garden is now. The Inn is situated opposite Titchfield Abbey - the old home of the Earl of Southampton. The 3rd Earl was the patron of William Shakespeare and it is believed that he wrote some sonnets whilst visiting. The Governor of the Isle of Wight arrested Charles 1st at the Abbey before taking him to Carisbrooke Castle.
