Originally a
thirteenth century abbey, this grand building on the outskirts of
Titchfield was later
converted into Place House, a mansion for the Earls of Southampton. It is
claimed that some of Shakespeare's plays, including 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'A
Midsummer Night's Dream' were first performed here.
The grand Tudor gatehouse (this is an external hyperlink) now dominates the impressive remains.
