Park Gate

This thriving residential community is built along the A27 Southampton Road. Close to the M27, Park Gate grew up around the railway station. It was one of the main gathering points for strawberries grown in the area.

In 1913 over 3,000 tons of strawberries were sent out from here. The use of the train to distribute the fruit ceased in 1966 but the station still exists and the adjacent Station Master's House is a restaurant.

Although fruit and vegetables are still grown in the area, modern industry and new housing dominate the present landscape.

In the 1980's the Park Gate/Locks Heath area became a growth sector for South Hampshire. The loose collection of horticultural holdings became a new settlement based on Fareham's Western Wards between the River Hamble and Titchfield Common. The Segensworth employment area transformed Park Gate into a modern business zone along the A27 and around Junction 9 of the M27 motorway. The centre of Park Gate has developed into a shopping and service centre for the new community.
