Whiteley

An image of Whiteley Community CentreThe settlement at Whiteley was planned as a growth sector for South Hampshire. The area north of Junction 9 of the M27 was identified as a site for the development of housing for about 6,000 people with a business park, a golf course, schools, community and service facilities to support them. The woodland setting of Whiteley has been retained to contain the settlement area and provide a distinctive framework for development.

Solent Business Park, lying to the east of the main access road that runs northwards from Junction 9, was the first development phase started in the mid 1980's. The developers of the business park invested heavily in landscaping to create green campus that includes a series of lakes and provides one of the most attractive settings for modern industry and employment uses in the whole country. The business park is home to a range of major companies such as Zurich/Eagle Star, Lloyds TSB, Datacard, Shoosmith and Harrison, Thomson Local Directories, Prudential Assurance and Scottish Amicable. Many development opportunities remain.

New houses have been constructed steadily throughout the 1990's. The new housing is set within the context of extensive areas of retained woodland and greenspaces. There is an extensive network of new roads and footpaths. The new community is served by an infant and junior school built at Gull Coppice and this is complemented by an adjacent local community centre.

The Solent Hotel and Parson's Collar public house are key facilities meeting the needs of the business and residential communities. Whiteley Village, the new commercial and community centre for the new settlement, contains a range of "factory outlet" shopping, a small supermarket and a range of community facilities.
