Projects and Initiatives

This page has been created to let you know about current projects and initiatives the Community Safety Team are involved in. Many of the projects involve partnership working with agencies such as Hampshire Constabulary or Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, voluntary groups and schools.

Parent Information Packs

This year the Community Safety Officer has worked with a borough secondary school to create Information Packs to be handed to Parents at Parents Evenings. The pack includes information leaflets from Parentlineplus, Drink Aware, Connexions, and Frank.(All of these organisations websites can be accessed through our Feedback and Advice pages).

Teenage Road Accident Prevention Training (TRAPT)

This hard-hitting course organised by Hampshire Fire and Rescue in Fareham, is aimed at young peoples understanding of the importance of driving in a safe manner. Its a half day course and is run by local Firefighters. Currently individuals are referred onto the course through the Anti Social Behaviour Officer.

School Education Programmes

The Community Safety Team has worked with the Youth Service to develop 3 School programmes based around Community Safety which can be delivered to tutor or year groups. These cover the themes of Graffiti, Community Perceptions and Criminal Damage. The programmes are centered around the individual school requirements and try to reflect the Curriculum. The delivery of programmes can be in the form of interactive sessions or short sessions involving other agencies, normally delivered to a year group in a circuit style over one afternoon (often referred to as a carousel).

Local Intervention Fire Education Course (LIFE)

Through the LIFE Project, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service deliver a five day course for young people aged between 13 and 18.

All of the young people who attend the course have been referred to us due to them either being involved in or thought to be on the brink of firesetting, crime or anti social behaviour.

The course is designed to change the attitude and behaviour of the young people by getting them to:

  • adopt a new set of values
  • address the consequences of antisocial and firesetting behaviour
  • work co-operatively with others
  • see the advantage of improving their own learning and performance
  • gain self-esteem and self confidence
  • communicate better

The benefit to the local community has been seen from the courses that have already run. There has been a reduction in deliberate firesetting and anti social behaviour in these areas.

The LIFE project is a very good example of partnership working as HFRS work alongside several youth agencies as well as Hampshire Constabulary and Local Authorities to identify candidates for the course from the local community.
