Could your class take the five note challenge?

Hampshire County Council is launching a five note challenge as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad. With just five notes: C,G,B,F,E, people are being asked to compose their own musical masterpiece, inspired by the London 2012 Games.

Once completed people who take up the challenge are being asked to share their piece and upload it via www.hants.gov.uk/5-note-challenge (this is an external hyperlink) for everyone to enjoy. The website has a number of examples covering a wide range of musical styles and different approaches to the challenge to help people get started.

The five note challenge is part of the County Council’s wider Hampshire Welcomes the World project. There are five programmes each focussing on a different continent of the world, as represented by a particular ring of the Olympic Flag: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Each programme will consist of musical workshops, performances and outreach events designed to engage schools. For example, schools in the north east will be focussing on the continent of Asia, exploring the music of Indonesia, Japan, Nepal and India. Each programme will culminate in a musical event at an iconic cultural venue in Hampshire: Winchester Cathedral, The New Forest, Danebury Fort, Farnborough Airship Hangar and Staunton Country Park. Launched to coincide with International Education Week, the new initiative is a major strand of the Get Set goes global (this is an external hyperlink) programme.

Sport uniting the world

Free learning resources (this is an external hyperlink) are available from the Get Set website, which can also help other schools select teams to support.

As part of the official London 2012 education programme, Get Set goes global aims to help students explore how sport brings the world together. The first strand of the programme, ‘Get Set for the Olympic Truce’, was launched in September 2011 (this is an external hyperlink).

How schools can get involved

The first thing to do is register for Get Set (This is an external hyperlink) the education programme designed by the organisers of the games specifically to enable schools to get involved and engage with the lead up to London 2012.

Registering is only the first step. To get your school really engaged with the programme and to link up with the other schools and share in the good practice of others, schools should be aiming to become part of the Get Set Network, which is a more developed level of involvement. There are more opportunities and teaching materials for schools that are part of the Network.

Join the Get Set Network (This is an external hyperlink)

The Get Set network is a special community of schools and colleges which are:

  • Demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic Values (friendship, excellence and respect) and the Paralympic Values (inspiration, determination, courage and equality)
  • Using the London 2012 Games to inspire learners of all ages to get involved in Values-based projects and activities

Any school or college in the UK can become a member of the Get Set network and receive rewards and recognition from London 2012.

 Get Set Network toolkits

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) have created a series of Get Set network toolkits to help schools and colleges submit their applications. There are different versions of the toolkit depending on what type of school is applying, with specific and relevant case studies and images.

All of the materials can be downloaded from the London 2012 Official Site (this is an external hyperlink).
