When you join the Council, irrespective of whether you have worked in Local Government before, you will need to work a 26 week probationary period during which you will be expected to demonstrate your suitability for the post. During this time you will have planned reviews with your line manager to make sure you are settling in to your role and to give you the opportunity to discuss any training needs or difficulties you have identified. Having completed the probationary period successfully you will then be confirmed in post.
The Council actively supports training and development for its employees and is committed to develop the potential of all its employees, not only for their current jobs, but also for their future employability. The Council has been awarded Investors in People status and training and development opportunities are linked through the Performance Development Review process to the achievement of business objectives. The Council employs a dedicated ICT Trainer and has its own learning centre where a wide range of computer based training packages are available. All employees are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, to share their learning and create opportunities for others to learn.
The Council aims to ensure a safe working environment for all its employees through the implementation and monitoring of its health and safety practices, policies and procedures and providing the appropriate training and guidance.

The Council supports the system of collective bargaining and believes in the principle of solving employee relations issues by discussion and consultation. All employees have the right to join a Trade Union and take part in its activities.
